✺ Proil Shop FAQs ✺

  • Yes! We are most grateful for donations of books, records, CDs DVDs, toys, household items etc.

We PAT test electrical items and are also happy to take larger items of furniture by arrangement.

Any donations we can't sell are passed onto COPE or other charities.

  • Not exactly... at the moment we don't take large donations of clothes but we do have a clothes rail with some new or nearly new jackets and dresses and are grateful for any of these items.

We are also willing to help if you are doing a clear out - please get in touch. We have a community trailer and make regular visits to Lerwick to the charity shops and can help pass things on.

There is also a Salvation Army clothes bank outside the Bigton Community Shop.

In the winter we often have a rail with free jackets and outdoor clothing so please don't be stuck.

We hope to be able to take more clothes in future as we develop the Proil Shop layout. Keep an eye on the Proil Shop Facebook page for any new developments!

We also have Claes Swap events (see below for more information) which are a fabulous opportunity to clear our and revamp your wardrobe and help reduce waste at the same time!

  • Our regular Proil Shop opening times are 9:30am - 2pm on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

However, we are often here at other times so if the lights are on and you want to drop something in the porch any other time that is totally fine.

If we are working with a private group, recording, etc. there will be a 'do not disturb' sign at the door.

  • SATURDAY IS THE DAY!

On Saturday mornings from 9:30am there is a busy buzz at Hymhus courtesy of the Bigton Weekend Bakery and Stakkadale Coffee

The Proil Shop is open as usual but you can also purchase an array of freshly baked sourdough loaves, baguettes, pastries and quiches. If you like a good strong coffee to start the weekend you can also get the very best coffee experience to go with it!

We have plenty of chairs and tables so you are welcome to come in to our Pop-Up Café - sit, socialise and soak up the atmosphere!

  • Yes - this is undisputed!

Our renowned marmalade (orange and lemon) is made by our wonderful volunteer Ruby Moir.

We can't guarantee we will have marmalade in stock because it sells so quickly but if you are lucky enough to grab a jar you will not be disappointed.

  • Yes! We take card payments and there is no limit to the amount.

We also accept payments via PayPal if you already have the app.

  • We PAT test electrical items for safety but we cannot guarantee that they are working 100% perfectly.

We will give you a receipt and offer a 6-month refund if you need to return any electrical goods.

  • Yes, we have WiFI and you are welcome to use it when you visit.

Our network is Hymhus and the password is 'hymhus22'

Claes Swaps

We have a rail with a small selection of clothing in the Proil Shop but look out for our Claes Swap events where you can find a whole new wardrobe and help make the world a more sustainable place at the same time!

What is Proil?

Proil is a Shetland word for spoil or booty. We also use it to describe the collection of miscellaneous odds and ends you might find in that uncategorised drawer that everybody has (!) or maybe in the bottom of your handbag…

Shetland Dictionary: proil definition

Who was St Ninian?

Hymhus was formerly known as St Ninian’s Church, named after Ninian, an early missionary from Pictish times.

In 1958 the famous St Ninian’s Isle treasure was discovered by a local schoolboy at the chapel on St Ninian’s Isle.

Interested in volunteering at the Proil Shop?

We’re most grateful to our fabulous volunteers. We all find it’s quite a peaceful and lightsome shift! There’s also plenty of good books to read and music to listen to in the quiet moments.

We aim to keep volunteer slots lightsome and manageable. If you would like to help at St Ninian’s Proil for an hour or two either weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or occasionally to cover holidays, please pop in to speak to Jonathan or email jonathan@bigtoncollective.org.

We have a volunteer section on the Bigton Collective hub so you can also sign in there to access our rotas, connect with other volunteers and help us get organised!
